RLS 307:  The Dead Sea Scrolls
Midterm Exam – Take-home
Fall 2004

Respond to two of the following questions with an essay for each of one-and-a-half to two pages in length.  The test is open book and open note.  It is due under the professor’s office door by 5:00 PM on Wednesday, October 20.  In using quotations and ideas from others find a quick way to give credit to your source.  Produce your own discussion in response to the question and do not simply paraphrase the work of others.  You may discuss the test with others in advance of taking it, but do not discuss it while you are taking it.  Remember that one purpose of the test is to provide you with a way to communicate to the professor what you have learned about what we have read and discussed this semester.

1.            Who were the Watchers, and what was their significance in the scrolls from Qumran?

2.            Compare the Thanksgiving Hymns to the Psalms in the Bible with specific reference to one or two hymns and one or two Psalms.

3.            Update one of the stories of the Genesis Apocryphon to make it communicate in modern terms.

4.            How has space age technology helped and hindered the interpretation of the Dead Sea Scrolls?

5.            Do you think that John the Baptist came from or spent time in the community that collected and abandoned the Scrolls?

6.            Trace the journey the Scrolls have taken since their discovery in 1947.  What factors in the modern world have affected their interpretation?

7.            How did the Scrolls community go about interpreting the books of the prophets from the Hebrew Scripture?  What does their process of interpretation reveal about the community itself?
