The PearlThere was a famous teacher in the ancient world whose disciples followed him, listening to what he had to say as he wandered along the dusty roads of the Middle East. He taught by telling puzzling little stories that he called parables, which were designed to make the minds of his hearers stop in their tracks so that in a moment of inspiration they might understand the world and themselves in new ways. One of his stories was about a merchant on a buying trip to the Far East seeking to purchase fine jewels and silks to bring home and sell at a profit. As he made his way from booth to booth in the market place of a distant city, he suddenly came upon a pearl of such great beauty and value that he determined he must have it. Quickly he went out, sold all that he owned, liquidated all of his assets, and immediately came and bought the pearl. Now, my questions to you are: 1. What is your pearl? 2. How much would you be willing to give for it? |
