1.  An Early Oil Painting

I have painted off and on (mainly off) since I was an adolescent.  Most of my early work isn't worth showing.  One of them was taken from a photo of a light house in France and can be seen in our account of returning to that spot years later (see Adventures in Brittany).

Here's another of my early paintings.  I painted this one as a gift for my mother back in 1974.  It was done in oils.  Because my mother painted happy scenes of English thatched cottages with blue skies and bright trees, I wanted to do something a little different.  I painted a dramatic night skyline of Vancouver, B.C. and framed it in a black frame with a silver highlight.  Unfortunately, it is difficult to capture the way the paintings really look in a small clip for the webpage.  The colors are all wrong and the picture looks grainy.  However, it gives some idea.

When we moved to Lacey, my mother gave us the painting because we had so much empty wall space to fill.  The picture didn't fit how Merry was decorating the house.  We decided it had to be changed.

We found a cream mat (although one is not supposed to mat an oil painting) and a pink frame.  That fit with our decor.  To see what the new frame did to the painting, click here.
