Paintings
"Hanging in Paris"
The
final painting I'll show you is a quite typical scene from the foothills
of the Pacific Northwest around Mt. Reineer. Merry and I once hiked
in an area much like this one. I painted it in 1994 for the
Lechevallier family who live in France (see our account of our trips
with them). It was a small way to say thanks for all that they
did for our family.
I had
the painting framed originally in a simple oak frame and
Dominique (shown above holding it) had it reframed in this, much nicer,
pale green frame.
So, I guess that I can now say that I have paintings hanging in Paris!
(Well... it sounds good
anyhow...) During
our 1995 trip to France, we took my acrylic paints. While we were
with the Lechevallier family, I actually painted three pictures.
The
first was of a commercial barge waiting to go through a lock ahead of
us. It was painted on our wonderful holiday as we sailed through the
canals of Alsace Lorraine (see Summer
Preview). This was one of the few paintings that I have painted
live, on the spot. It's actually not one of my favorites.
Sometimes I get a vision of what I want to do ...but I just can't seem to
get it down on canvas. It's very frustrating when that
happens. But, it was painted, given, and received with love.
The
other two paintings were actually two copies of the same thing. I
painted a silhouette of the famous Mont St. Michel against a
brilliant sunset. I got the dramatic picture from a French
magazine. We had planned to keep the picture but the family liked it
so much that we wanted to give it to them. I finally solved the
little dilemma by doing a second painting of the same picture. We
gave one copy to Dominique's very sweet mother, who we all called Mame.
She's a gem. Here's a photo of Mame holding
the unframed painting. The bright spots in the sky are from the sun
that was shining through the leaves of a tree. But, you get the
idea....
