A study of the fundamentals of mechanics that deal with the relationships between applied loads, internal stresses and deformations in deformable bodies. Topics include the relationships between stress and strain; stress analysis for axial force, fixture, torsion, shear and combined loads; column stability; ultimate strength and safety factor; and deflections in beams and shafts. Course represents the transition from statics to upper-division courses in geotechnical engineering, fluid mechanics, machine design, advanced stress analysis and structural analysis and design. Prerequisite: GE 204.
