From the official pamphlet distributed by Las Pumas Rescue Shelter:

"The Rescue Shelter Las Pumas was born approximately 40 years ago, when the deforestation levels in Guanacaste were high.  The habitat of many wild animals decreased and many of these were captured to have them as pets, by the inhabitants of the area.  Mrs. Lilly Bodmer de Hagnauer, Swiss lady who always had a conservationist vision of the tropical native species, had a great protective spirit toward the animals.

This way, she received all those animals that the neighbors brought her or herself bought them to save them theirs life.  In few years she ended up having more than 160 animals, of more than 60 different species.  At the moment the Shelter counts with more than 80 individuals (22 species), all of the area of Guanacaste and many of them endangered.

The Rescue Shelter is part of the Arenal Tempisque Conservation Area (ACAT)-MINAE."
