Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to understand the importance of recycling, reducing, and reusing waste.

Objectives:
1. Students will learn the importance of recycling, reducing, and reusing items. They will also learn where it goes to get recycled.
2. Students will learn how to identify recyclable items.
3. Students will write journal entries in paragraph form on what they have learned.
Method: This will be performed by visiting Recycle City, located at the Northwest End http//www.ea.gov/gov/recyclecity/
1. First, the students will visit City Hall, enter all the rooms (The Mayor's office, The Office, Copy Room, and the Town
Meeting Room. Find out what each room is doing to recycle, reduce, and reuse items. Then they are to write a
paragraph on only one of the rooms of their findings.
2. Next they will then visit the church building. They will then think about how the member could recycle, reduce and reuse
items that are within the church. (They are allow to seek help from their family members.)
3. Next they will visit the Wrecker and do the following:
1. Make up a story about five of the reusable items. They will put their story in paragraph form.
2. They are to answer the following questions: What can old tires be used for?
3. They are to visit hazardous waste and also Kitchen & Bathroom Supplies. They are to write a paragraph of
their findings for each one.
Activity:
Students will be taught how a paper grocery bag can be created into a new piece of paper.
Time Allotment: 1 week
Procedure:
Step 1: 1/4th of a common grocery bag will be torn into pieces and then put into a blender. 2 cups of water will be added.
Then the top will be put on the blender. Then the blender will be turned on high for about 30 seconds.
Step 2: The wire screen will be put into the tub, just under the water, and pour pulp over it. Remove any lumps that might be on the screen.
Step 3: Move the pump around with fingers until it evenly covers screen.
Step 4: Carefully lift the screen out of the water and let any extra water out of the tub.
Step 5: Set the screen on top of a piece of blotting paper. Carefully place another piece of blotting paper on top of the screen. Turn the screen upside down and and tap the screen so that the sheet falls out onto the bottom piece of blotting paper. Remove the screen. Put another dry piece of paper on top of the sheet and roll it a few times with the rolling pin.
Step 6: Let the paper dry overnight
Students will be asked to bring in their finished project a week after it is given to them.
