Meeting Minutes

Treasurer’s Report

ASSMU is in the process of reviewing our yearly budget.  The 22 Account ledger shows a current balance of $349.24.  However, there was no entry for a deduction of the $100.00 that was given to the Tanzanian Children’s Fund in April or May of last year.  Kristina will follow up on the actual balance.

It was moved by Marie Holloway and seconded by Becky Cook that we use 22 Account funds to repay club officers for food expenses from last month’s meeting and use ASSMU funds to replace those back into the 22 account after the budget has been approved.   Rachel Grieves called to question, Teana Sterr seconded.  The members voted to approve the account withdrawal, motion carried.

Kathryn introduced our guest speakers:

Faye Barnes –Practicum and Student Teaching Placement Officer

Mary Foust – Endorsements, Certification and File Review Officer

Practica/Student Teaching Tips from Faye Barnes:

  • Practicum forms can be turned in the semester previous to placement requirement. This allows more time to assure placement as soon as the new semester begins.
  • Treat practica opportunities as a job interview – teachers and principals are observing and they are talking about how you present yourself and how well you get along with others.
  • See Mary Foust for file review and to go over student teaching/certification paperwork prior to meeting or contacting Faye.
  • When requesting a particular school or teacher for practicum or student teaching, it is helpful to give Faye at least two different teachers and/or schools.   If Faye does not receive a response within 3 weeks, she will try your second choice.
  • You can be placed at the same school as a relative or close friend, but not in the same classroom and preferably not the same grade
  • Do not talk to teachers or administrators at practicum school while placement process is taking place.  Leave this to Faye – it is her job.  The only exception to this is the Junior Achievement program in Intro to Education and Social Studies Methods.  JA and Dr. Hashimoto have their own placement process for these classes.
  • If you are planning to do a split student teaching for SPED and another endorsement – make sure your student teaching packet is turned in well in advance (8 weeks) of the regular deadline.

Endorsement, Certification and File Review Tips from Mary Foust:

  • Mary’s job is to take care of all paperwork for SMU and OSPI and to make sure that when you graduate you are certifiable to teach in the State of Washington.
  • File review can be done at any time. However, you need to make an appointment with Mary two semesters prior to scheduled student teaching to make sure you are on track.  Mary sifts through your file to be sure you have the required documents such as current cpr card, current fingerprints, endorsement (pink) sheets and completion of coursework and required practica and necessary signatures from the Education Division and the University.
  • Mary is also responsible for recording Praxis and West-B scores.
  • You must pass the Praxis, meet graduation requirements for SMU and your BA must be posted to your transcript in order to be certified.
  • Usually, a temporary teaching permit can be issued by Mary within 7 days of the BA being posted to your transcript.  This temporary permit is issued for 6 months ($35) until your official certificate can be processed and obtained.
  • The Praxis for your endorsement areas can be taken before, during or after student teaching.  It is best to take it just prior to student teaching in order to be able to be certified as soon as student teaching and BA are complete.
  • There is an Intern Substitute Permit where a student teacher can actually be paid to substitute in the classroom where he/she is student teaching.  This permit only applies to that particular class and is only accepted when the student teacher has at least begun their solo teaching and all parties involved approve of the Intern Substitute Permit.  “All parties” include the student teacher, mentor teacher, SMU Education Division official and the principal and school district where student teaching is taking place. The form is available on the OSPI website.

Last minute reminders/announcements:

  • Ed club will plan to have Faye and Mary back again each semester (if possible).
  • ASSMU judicial committee members needed.  If interested in more information talk to Kathryn.
  • Any fundraising ideas would be appreciated as we are unsure at this point if ASSMU will accept our complete budget.  We like being able to serve lunch at the meetings, but financially we may need to come up with ways to subsidize the costs.  Possible donations and/or fundraisers. . .  Any ideas?????
  • We are hoping to do an electronic unit exchange within the club and many members displayed an interest.  Jennifer Fagan said she has access to loads of CD-R if we want to use them for the future unit plan swap.
