What

"Issues in Converting a Large Comprehensive Urban High School Into Small Learning Communities"

Washington is now regarded as one of the states most engaged in education reform. Part of this effort includes creating smaller learning communities within our high schools. What has sparked this initiative? Why is it being espoused by education leaders and funded by both private initiatives such as the Gates Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education? How are smaller teaming communities different from our current approach to school structures and pedagogy? Can our school systems respond positively and effectively in reinventing their comprehensive high schools? Are parents and students prepared to support such drastic changes? Is the teaching profession able and willing to engage itself in this reform movement? These are important questions that will be addressed.
