Comprehensive Safe Schools Plan:
Safety seems to be high priority for school districts today concerning the escalating incidents of violence, crime, drugs/alcohol and other types of crisis. It is essential that these plans are in place and that staff, parents and students are made aware of them in order to successfully carry them out. Comprehensive safe schools plan need to include some of the following:
· Physical safety · Emergency response planning · Policies and procedures · Staff development · Awareness strategies · Student codes · Prevention Programs · Intervention and referrals

Role of Staff, Students and Families in Safe School Planning:
In creating a comprehensive safe schools plan, all of those involve with the school need to be involved in the planning. There are many ways that staff, students and families can contribute. Staff can be involved by developing or monitoring the school safety plan. The can provide feedback on their concerns and observations. Staff can model and teach appropriate behaviors that can help with school climate issues. Students can give their concerns and feedback on what they see as safety issues within the school, which would allow them to gain some ownership over their school and education. Families can be involved by making recommendations to the staff about the development of the school safety plan. Parents need to be aware of the plan in order to support their student in following the plan.

Peer helper programs are becoming more and more implemented into the school system due to its effectiveness and efficiency. There are many benefits to peer helping such as improved communication, self-esteem and conflict resolution skills. It is also helpful for school counselors and teachers who can utilize peer helper programs as a resource in order for them to concentrate on other school issues.
