English 9, 2004/2005

English 9 includes work on vocabulary development, reading and writing. We will study Greek root words used in the English language, learn vocabulary terms associated with writing, review writing conventions, practice speaking in front of the class, and write a lot.

We will read one class book per quarter, along with many shorter works of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. In addition to in-class reading, students will be expected to read one book per quarter outside of class. This book will come from the Accelerated Reader list, and the student must pass the book’s AR test to receive credit.

Late homework will not be accepted, unless due to an excused absence. Students should get notes and assignments prior to pre-planned absences, and turn in assignments on the first day back in class.

Extra credit assignments will occasionally be offered.

Missed tests can be made up only in the case of an excused absence, and test retakes will be allowed if the score is below a D (60%). There will be a comprehensive final exam at the end of each semester, on which students will be allowed to use book and notes.
