The
FAFSA (Free
Application for Federal Student Aid) is the first step in
the financial aid process. You use it to apply for federal
student financial aid, such as grants, loans, and work-study. In
addition, most states and schools use information from the FAFSA
to award non-federal aid.

The Department (ED) will provide more
than $67 billion this year, about 70 percent of all student
aid, to help millions of students and families pay for
postsecondary education.

Federal Student Aid FSA is financial help for
students enrolled in eligible programs at participating schools
to cover school (a four-year or two-year public or private
educational institution, a career school or trade school)
expenses, including tuition and fees, room and board, books and
supplies, and transportation. Most federal aid is need based.
The three most common types of aid are grants, loans, and
work-study.
