Sexual Predators

The basis of the video was that it is important to know about and understand sexual predators.  This knowledge and awareness can keep you and your children safe from sexual predators.  They are manipulative and dangerous.    By teaching your children a few rules about strangers and dangers you may save your child’s life.

Wesley Allen Dodd

Was interviewed on death row.  A notorious sex predator in Washington State.  He described himself as a shy, loner and active in the band.  He was convicted of 3 counts of Aggravated Murder.   He sexually abused and murdered 3 boys.   He first exposed himself to children, the molested them and escalated to murder.  He didn’t think that he would get caught, but he did.  He didn’t think that he would get caught again, so he continued to offend.  Some of his victims reported him.

Dodd stated that he carefully selected the right kids.  He stated that they were young, shy and loners.  The detective stated, “you just described yourself, where you abused?”  Dodd stated that he was not abused, but that statement is suspect.

Dodd stated that he suspected that the ones he was not sure about probably would be the ones that would tell on him.

Grooming

Often a molester will groom his victims.   He will start out slowly saying nice things to them, touching them gently and giving them small things.  He will eventually gain their trust and the trust of their parents.  Once he feels that he has gained their trust he is then safe to precede with his plan, exploit them.  He may specifically search for unsupervised children, emotionally shy and vulnerable children.

Privacy is a factor for a molester, whether someone the child knows or a stranger.  More often the molester is someone the child knows.

 Sexual deviancy feeds of secrecy.

LAWS

Washington state enacted a law in 1990.  I did not catch whether it required Registration or Notification.  Currently in Washington state all sex offenders much Register with the sheriffs department in the county that they reside and prior to released from prison communities are notified of their release and risk to the community.

A person on the video stated that Sexual Predators will never change.  Corrected, punished, rehabilitated Sexual Predators WILL re-commit.  He felt that offenders should be kept away in a secure facility.  If returned to the community, supervision is critical to prevent re-offending.

 Educate your children

Communication between parents and children are important.  Have regular conversations regarding the dangers of strangers, and/or gut feelings about situations.

Tell mommy/daddy about adults that make you uncomfortable, no matter who they are.

Dodd even suggest that we teach children that sometimes it is OK to say NO to an adult.  He also stated that children that are molested should tell their abusers they won’t tell, then TELL!

Isley, who lost a child, states that parents need to be aware and watchful.

A psychotherapist, Michael Comte, points out that we need to teach children self protection skills.  Be careful of who you trust.

You can reduce the risk

  1. Talk
  2. Role play what to do if approached by a stranger
  3. Safe environments (open areas, people nearby, not near the woods)
  4. Adults nearby-supervision
  5. Say no if approached
  6. Run-yell, “you are not my mommy/daddy, don’t touch me!!!!!”
  7. Tell someone you trust.

Girls have  a 50% chance of sometimes being sexually attached and boys a 30% chance.
