Educational Planning and Career Development
à Four areas student growth (Gysbers and Moore)
1. Self Knowledge and interpersonal skills: increase students self awareness and acceptance of others
2. Life roles, settings and events: interconnection among various life roles, the settings in which students live, learn, work and situations that a student will encounter over lifetime
3. Life career planning: master decision making skills, career interest
4. Basic studies and occupational preparation: all learning objectives found in schools curriculum
à Respect for learning and development leads to intentional plans for ed and career, equals high level of self caring
à Students eager for knowledge and with curiosity had positive influence in formative years
à Students whose parents did not read, bond with, etc, do not have love for learning
à Schools have kids from both ends
à Less advantaged students demand more attention
à Academically strong students often overlooked
à Strong students can become bored, disruptive, if unchallenged by curriculum
à Less advantaged kids need to be inspired, encouraged and to plan for future
à Counselor: assist school to design/implement programs, policies that benefit ALL students
à School counselors are student oriented not school or curriculum oriented
à Counselor for student advocacy
à Advocate when policies and procedures are revised by admin
à Limitless chances for counselor to review programs
à Counselors use skills of observation with students and school life
à Use position of advocacy to join committees that focus on students needs
à Combined efforts of professional, focus will be on students needs
à Foster lifelong learning:
1. Infuse affective ed with daily lessons
2. Examine grading, promotion and policies
3. Encourage parental involvement
4. Recognize value of learning by showing adults who continue learning their whole lives
5. Focus on career development
à Comprehensive school program should:
1. Career development is lifelong process
2. Eliminate gender and culture stereotypes
3. Higher ed does not equal career satisfaction
4. Present no longer predicts ones future
5. Career development is interactive process
à Career Exploration: begins in elementary school in the form of field trips, guest speakers, etc
à Middle and High School, more focused exploration
à Counselors provide wide range of services
